Phoenix Mountain
52 kilometres north-west of Dandong, the 840-metre-high Phoenix Mountain (Fenghuangshan) towers over the Yalu River. The peace and majesty of the sacred mountain attracted ancient emperors such as Li Shimin of the Tang and Hu Bilie of the Yuan Dynasties, who come to repose themselves and left temples and pagodas behind. The mountain is dotted with caves and springs which form the most interesting scenery. The most famous are the Phoenix Cave, the Church Cave, the Holy Spring and the Phoenix Tear Spring. On the west ridge of the mountain is a newly discovered scenic spot, highlighted by rocks which resemble images of Guanyin, the God of Longevity and some other Immortals.
A temple fair, locally called the "Medicine King Meeting", is held on the mountain every 28th of April and visitors are impressed by local specialties, especially Chinese herbal medicine.
How to get there: Only slow trains and buses can take you there, express trains pass without a stop.
Cost: 30RMB for entrance into the mountain. RMB10 for the Phoenix Cave.
